The British Standards Institution (BSI) have this month published new standards on daylight for new buildings. 

The old BSI standards form the basis of the Government's guidance on daylight standards, and so these are likely to be updated shortly. It is anticipated there will be a period of nine months whereby the systems will run in parallel. 

These standards are more rigorous and wide-ranging in that they apply to all rooms in a new building, not just habitable rooms, and to the quality of the views from them.

The Regent's Wharf scheme in Islington is given as an example of a current scheme that would not meet the new standards. 

Industry feedback seems positive so far, although there is a concern that the new standards do not consider the impact of new developments on the daylight enjoyed by the residents of existing surrounding buildings.
