Dealing with modern architecture is perhaps the most controversial area of Historic England’s work. So how do they advise the Minister which modern commercial buildings ‘make the grade’ and should become listed? And once listed, how do they decide what is an acceptable level of change to those buildings? What are the common issues that arise as a result of listing modern buildings? These were the questions answered at our modern listed buildings seminar on Tuesday 28 January 2020.
The talk focused on commercial buildings: offices, hotels and institutions. We heard from Duncan McCallum, Strategy and Listing Director at Historic England, Laurie Handcock, Director, Built Heritage and Townscape at Iceni Projects, Tim Bowder-Ridger, CEO and Senior Partner at Conran & Partners and John Bosworth, Head of Planning at Maples Teesdale. The event was held at The City Centre, 80 Basinghall Street, London and we managed to catch the London City Model before it heads off to MIPIM in Cannes.
