The Government has this week launched a fresh consultation paper on reform of the important and complex matter of the energy performance of buildings (EPB). The consultation is open until 26 February 2025, and seeks views from a breadth of stakeholders.
As the paper details, the Government aims to reform the current regime to support a better understanding and management of EPB, whilst striving to achieve key national net-zero targets.
The consultation will consider a wide range of possible changes, including the introduction of more detailed metrics in EPCs, which could cover energy cost, carbon, energy use, fabric performance, an analysis of the type of heating system in place, and “smart readiness”.
EPCs may also need to be updated more regularly, and be required for a wider range of buildings and in more contexts.
The Government’s expectation is that the consultation will lead to meaningful improvements to the EPC regime to create more useful tools to promote energy efficiency, and to enhance building standards in a real and measurable way.
