This is a really interesting piece on how planning powers were used to safeguard an LGBTQ+ venue following an application to redevelop the site. Such venues are becoming increasingly rare and here the Council applied its equality duties as well as planning policies to deliver an outcome that ensures that a new public house will form part of the final development. In particular the Council has done its best to future proof the venue by requiring an extended period in which to secure an LGBT operator for the pub and to ensure that long opening hours remained compatible with the residential uses. An example for other LGBTQ+ and minority venues under threat.
