Surveys show that office workers would generally prefer to be located in town or city centres rather than business parks or other out-of-town locations. This shouldn't really come as a surprise to anyone - the relative merits of a city centre location for workers are easy to understand. But most proposals for new office spaces are still being made outside the town centre in all but the largest regional cities. Could local authorities be doing more to promote and facilitate town centre office development? This article highlights the potential benefits to leisure and retail operators who would benefit from the proximity to higher-earning customers during the day, which has the potential to create a virtuous circle of regeneration.
